1% inspiration and 99% perspiration
Thomas Edison never stopped searching for new and better ways to do things. Once, while working on his storage battery, he made eight thousand tests without success. An assistant asked if he wasn`t discouraged.
"Why should I feel downhearted?", replied Edison. "We`ve made a lot of progress. At least we know 8,000 things that won`t work!"
The remark was typical of Edison`s attitude towards science. He believed in practical experiments rather than in theories. It was he who defined genius as "1 per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration", and declared that "there is no substitute for hard work."
